History and Philosophy
AUW’s educational roots reach back to 1907, when Sheikh Babiker Badri established a secular school for girls in Rufa’a.
The educational pathway expanded through intermediate schooling in 1951 and secondary schooling in 1955. Ahfad University College for Women opened in 1966, gained authority to award degrees in 1984, and became Ahfad University for Women in 1995.
AUW’s philosophy presents women as active participants in family, community, and national life, supported through academic study, practical training, research, and extension.

Rural Extension Program
The Rural Extension Program began in 1973 and became a university requirement in 1978.
It connects students with rural communities through field learning, community service, research, teamwork, and educational activities.
The programme is designed to help students understand community priorities and practise respectful mobilisation, communication, and collaboration with communities and partner organisations.
